UK Government Rejects Compensation Calls from WASPI Women After Review

The UK government has rejected renewed calls to provide compensation to women affected by changes to the state pension age, confirming its position following a recent internal review. The decision was announced in the United Kingdom on Wednesday and applies to campaigners associated with Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI).

Ministers said the review reconsidered earlier findings but concluded that no compensation scheme would be introduced. The decision follows long-running disputes over the increase and equalisation of the state pension age, which affected women born in the 1950s who say they were not properly informed about the changes.

The government response comes after previous recommendations by the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman, which found maladministration in how changes were communicated. While the ombudsman highlighted failures in official notification, the final determination on financial redress was left to the government.

Officials confirmed that the cost, scope, and precedent of a compensation package were reassessed during the review process. The government maintained that although communication shortcomings were acknowledged, broad compensation was not considered proportionate.

WASPI campaigners have continued to press for redress, arguing that inadequate notice disrupted retirement planning for hundreds of thousands of women. The group has staged protests and submitted formal complaints over several years.

Opposition figures have raised the issue in Parliament, seeking commitments ahead of future legislative sessions. However, the government’s latest position confirms that no compensation programme will be established at this stage, and no new timetable for further review has been announced.

No additional policy changes related to the state pension age were disclosed alongside the decision, and ministers indicated that the matter is considered closed unless further parliamentary action is taken.
