Former U.S. Navy Vice Admiral Nancy Lacore Announces Run for Congress After Removal from Command

Nancy Lacore, a retired U.S. Navy vice admiral who was removed from her post as Chief of the Navy Reserve, announced her candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday. The announcement was made for South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District in the 2026 midterm elections.

Lacore’s decision to run for Congress follows her removal from command by U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in August 2025. At the time of her removal, she had served 35 years in the Navy, including as a helicopter pilot and as a three-star admiral.

In her announcement, Lacore stated that she was removed from her position “without cause” and expressed her intention to continue serving the public through elected office. Her campaign announcement was posted on her social media platform.

Lacore’s bid places her in the Democratic primary for the coastal South Carolina district that includes Charleston. The seat is currently open as the incumbent representative is running for governor of South Carolina.

She joins a field of candidates competing for the nomination, including other Democrats and Republican contenders seeking to succeed the outgoing representative. The primary election is scheduled ahead of the general election later this year.

At this time, there has been no official response from the Department of Defense regarding Lacore’s removal aside from previously reported personnel actions.
