Completed — Bob Weir, the American rock musician best known as a founding member of the Grateful Dead, has died at the age of 78, his family confirmed. The announcement was made on January 10, 2026, through an official statement on his social media channels. According to that announcement, Weir passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones after a prolonged illness involving underlying lung issues following a battle with cancer.
Weir was born Robert Hall “Bob” Weir on October 16, 1947, and rose to prominence in the 1960s as one of the principal members of the Grateful Dead. Alongside Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, Bill Kreutzmann, and later Mickey Hart, Weir helped shape the band’s distinctive blend of rock, folk, blues, and psychedelia that became central to the San Francisco counterculture scene.
The Grateful Dead formed in 1965 and became renowned for their extensive touring and dedicated fan base known as Deadheads. Weir’s contributions included lead vocals and guitar on seminal tracks such as “Sugar Magnolia,” “One More Saturday Night,” and “Mexicali Blues,” and he remained a driving creative force within the group throughout its evolution.
After the death of Jerry Garcia in 1995, the Grateful Dead ceased as a formal band, but Weir continued his musical career. He performed with various configurations including The Other Ones, The Dead, RatDog, and Dead & Company — a later group that continued the Grateful Dead legacy through live performances with fellow original member Bill Kreutzmann and newer collaborators.
In the months prior to his death, Weir had been diagnosed with cancer in July 2025 and continued to perform, including at a three-night 60th anniversary celebration of his music at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Despite moments of improved health, his family’s announcement stated he ultimately succumbed to complications related to lung issues after initially overcoming the cancer.
Bob Weir is survived by his wife, Natascha Muenter, and their two daughters. His passing leaves Bill Kreutzmann as the only surviving original member of the Grateful Dead lineup.
